Broken Rainbow – Helpline for LGBT people experiencing domestic violence

Broken Rainbow logobroken rainbow helpline

Broken Rainbow is a registered charity running a UK LGBT domestic violence helpline. We are the UK’s only National LGBT Domestic Violence Helpline providing confidential support to all members of the LGBT community, their family and friends, and agencies supporting them.

Our LGBT operators are highly trained and experienced in the specifics of LGBT domestic violence, with many coming from front line services. They understand the issues LGBT callers will face and go through extended training to provide the best support they can. As members of the Telephone Helplines Association we follow their operating guidelines to, “…ensure the highest quality response for callers seeking information, advice and help…”.

Our trained LGBT helpline workers take over 1600 calls a year. During these calls we help with building a safety plan, discuss housing options, give general information about legal rights, give information about local support services, discuss making a police report and provide confidential listening support.

Helpline telephone number is 0300 999 LGBT (5428) (Monday and Thursday 2-8pm; Wednesday 10am-1pm).

Opening hours for the helpline are:

Mon 2pm-8pm

Wed 10 am-1pm

Thur 2pm-8pm

Broken Rainbow LGBT Domestic Violence Service (UK) was formed in 2004 to give a voice and provide support to LGBT people experiencing domestic violence. Since then we have helped mainstream domestic violence agencies to understand the needs of LGBT people and provide us with better services.

Since starting we have grown our core services from a two-person organisation to running the only national LGBT DV&A helpline. This has been made possible by the excellent support from Home Office and other funding. Broken Rainbow wants lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to have the same level of support as mainstream sections of society.

To do this we raise awareness of the differing factors surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender domestic violence and abuse; having to come out to police or GPs and hospitals just to be able to report the domestic violence; DV & civil partnerships and the implications; the silence in our own community.

We advise local professionals, with permission, on those very high risk cases that can end up in extreme violence or death for the victim. We lobby MP’s, consult with the Criminal Prosecution Service and Ministry Of Justice with regards to LGBT domestic violence issues. We provide LGBT perpetrator training, LGBT survivor support training to local authorities, the Probation Service, Women’s Aid branches, Refuge and male Domestic violence charities.
